FAQ

AmeriCrane VoTech provides professional mobile crane operator training, CIC certification preparation, practical examinations, and rigger/signalperson courses. Our programs combine classroom instruction with practical, real-world training designed to promote safe crane operation and prepare candidates for nationally accredited certification testing.

Whether you are pursuing your first crane operator certification, renewing an existing credential, scheduling a practical examination, or arranging training for your employees, the following answers will help you understand the process.

Mobile Crane Operator Certification

What is CIC crane operator certification?
Crane Institute Certification, commonly called CIC, is a nationally recognized certification program for crane operators. Candidates must demonstrate the knowledge and practical operating skills required for the certification they are pursuing.

AmeriCrane VoTech provides training and exam preparation using Crane Institute of America curriculum and administers CIC practical examinations.

Does OSHA require mobile crane operators to be certified?
OSHA generally requires operators of covered cranes used in construction to obtain certification through an approved method. These requirements are addressed under OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC, including Section 1926.1427.

Requirements can vary according to the equipment, work being performed, industry, and applicable state or local regulations. Employers remain responsible for determining which regulations apply to their operations.

Is operator certification the same as an employer evaluation?
No. Certification and employer evaluation are separate parts of OSHA compliance.

Certification verifies that an operator has passed the applicable written and practical examinations. The employer must also evaluate the operator on the equipment the employee will operate and document that evaluation as required by OSHA.

Completing a certification program does not eliminate the employer’s responsibility to evaluate the operator.

Is CIC certification nationally recognized?
CIC offers nationally accredited crane operator certifications. A nationally recognized credential can help operators document their knowledge and operating skills for employers throughout the United States.

Operators and employers should verify any additional licensing or qualification requirements imposed by the state, city, project owner, or employer where the work will be performed.

How long does crane operator certification remain valid?
Crane operator certifications issued by nationally accredited testing organizations are generally valid for five years. Operators must complete the applicable recertification requirements before their credentials expire.

Always check the expiration date printed on your certification and begin the renewal process early enough to prevent a lapse.

Is crane operator certification portable between employers?
A certification issued by a nationally accredited testing organization is generally portable, meaning it belongs to the operator rather than one specific employer.

However, a new employer must still evaluate the operator on the equipment and tasks the employee will perform. Company policies, project specifications, or local licensing rules may also create additional requirements.

Can one certification cover every type of crane?
No. Operators must hold certification appropriate for the crane type they will operate. Different crane configurations require different operating knowledge, load-chart interpretation, setup procedures, and practical skills.

AmeriCrane VoTech can help candidates identify the appropriate testing category based on the equipment they use.

Do I need previous crane experience before enrolling?
Experience is strongly beneficial because certification preparation is not a substitute for all the supervised experience needed to become a competent crane operator.

Contact AmeriCrane VoTech before registering if you are new to crane operation. We can discuss your background, the program’s pace, and whether the course is appropriate for your current experience level.

Do I need a CDL to become a certified crane operator?
A commercial driver’s license is not automatically required to earn crane operator certification. However, a CDL may be required if your job involves driving a crane or commercial vehicle on public roads.

CDL requirements are separate from crane operator certification and depend on the vehicle, its weight, its configuration, and applicable state and federal transportation regulations.

Written and Practical Examinations

What is covered on the written crane operator test?
Written testing evaluates the candidate’s understanding of subjects such as crane setup, inspections, load charts, operating procedures, site hazards, signaling, stability, safety regulations, and operator responsibilities.

The exact content depends on the certification category being pursued.

What happens during the practical examination?
The practical examination requires the candidate to demonstrate safe control of a mobile crane through assigned tasks. Candidates are evaluated on their ability to follow instructions, maintain control, operate accurately, recognize boundaries, and complete required maneuvers safely.

Testing must be completed according to standardized procedures so candidates are evaluated consistently.

Can I schedule only a practical examination?
Yes. AmeriCrane VoTech offers a Practical Exams Only option for candidates who have already passed all required written tests.

Written-test documentation and other eligibility requirements must be confirmed before the practical examination is scheduled.

Can the practical examination be conducted at my company’s facility?
AmeriCrane VoTech may conduct practical examinations at a company’s location using a qualified crane. The facility must be approved as a practical examination site before testing takes place.

The facility manager or owner may also need to serve as or designate the Practical Exam Coordinator through CIC. Travel expenses, per diem, equipment suitability, site approval, and scheduling requirements will be included in the company’s quote.

Can I use my employer’s crane for the practical exam?
Potentially. The crane must be appropriate for the examination, properly maintained, available for testing, and accepted under the applicable practical-exam requirements.

AmeriCrane VoTech will need information about the crane and testing location before confirming the examination.

Does AmeriCrane VoTech provide practical exams nationwide?
AmeriCrane VoTech can provide practical-exam services outside Oklahoma when the facility, equipment, candidate eligibility, travel arrangements, and exam-site requirements can be satisfied.

Companies should request a custom quote based on their location and number of candidates.

Company and Group Training

Can AmeriCrane VoTech train an entire company crew?
Yes. Training may be arranged for company groups, depending on class size, location, equipment, instructor availability, and the type of course requested.

When requesting information, provide the number of employees, their experience levels, the cranes they operate, the certification categories needed, and your preferred timeframe.

Can training be customized for our equipment and workplace?
Company training can be planned around the employer’s equipment and operational needs when the location and equipment meet applicable requirements.

AmeriCrane VoTech will review your goals, crane types, candidate experience, facility, and testing requirements before recommending an appropriate training plan.

Why should employers invest in professional crane training?
Professional training helps employees strengthen their understanding of load charts, inspections, crane setup, signaling, hazard recognition, operating procedures, and regulatory responsibilities.

Effective training can support a stronger safety culture, help employers address compliance requirements, reduce preventable mistakes, and give operators a clearer understanding of their responsibilities.

Certification should be treated as one part of a complete crane-safety program that also includes employer evaluations, equipment inspections, maintenance, lift planning, supervision, and job-specific training.

AmeriCrane VoTech’s Five-Day Course

What is included in the Mobile Crane Operator Five-Day Course?

The five-day program is structured to prepare candidates for both the knowledge-based and practical portions of the CIC certification process.

The typical schedule includes:

  • Three eight-hour days of classroom instruction and written-test preparation
  • One day for proctored online written testing and practice on the applicable crane
  • One day dedicated to the practical examination

Course schedules and testing arrangements are subject to availability, so candidates should confirm current details when registering.

What topics are covered during classroom instruction?

Instruction may include:

  • OSHA crane regulations and operator responsibilities
  • Basic crane terminology and operating principles
  • Crane setup and site conditions
  • Pre-operation inspections
  • Load-chart interpretation
  • Crane capacity and operating radius
  • Stability and center of gravity
  • Rigging fundamentals
  • Standard hand signals

Candidates should contact AmeriCrane VoTech to confirm which category and crane type are appropriate for their work and certification goals.

Where is the five-day course held?
Scheduled classes are administered at the Central Tech classroom facility in Cleveland, Oklahoma, just west of Tulsa.

AmeriCrane VoTech also serves operators and companies from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and locations throughout the United States. Contact us to discuss current class dates, available testing locations, or company training needs.

Does the five-day course include hands-on practice?
Yes. The program includes time for candidates to become familiar with the specific mobile crane used for the applicable practical examination.

The amount of practice available is intended as exam preparation. Candidates should not assume that a short certification-preparation course replaces the broader supervised experience needed to become a proficient operator.

Will I take the written and practical tests during the course?
The program is structured so candidates can complete written testing and practical testing during the five-day schedule. Written examinations are typically administered on Thursday, followed by practical examinations on Friday.

Testing schedules may change due to candidate volume, equipment availability, weather, or other circumstances.

Is passing the course guaranteed?
No legitimate certification program can guarantee that every candidate will pass. Success depends on the candidate’s knowledge, preparation, operating ability, attention to safety, and performance during the examinations.

AmeriCrane VoTech provides focused instruction and practical preparation to help candidates understand what will be expected, but each candidate must successfully complete the required tests.

What happens if I do not pass an examination?
Retesting options depend on which portion of the certification process was not completed successfully and the applicable testing organization’s policies.

Contact AmeriCrane VoTech for help reviewing your next steps, available retesting dates, fees, and any additional preparation that may be recommended.

What should I bring to class?

Candidates should plan to bring:

AmeriCrane VoTech will provide a current list of requirements before your scheduled course.

Rigger and Signalperson Training

Does AmeriCrane VoTech offer rigger and signalperson courses?
Yes. AmeriCrane VoTech offers a three-day Level I and Level II Rigger-Signalperson course for individuals and company groups.

The program focuses on the knowledge needed to work safely around cranes, properly handle loads, recognize rigging hazards, and communicate effectively with crane operators.

What is a qualified rigger?
A qualified rigger is a person who has the knowledge, training, and experience necessary to properly rig the specific load involved in a particular lift.

A person may be qualified for certain rigging tasks without being qualified for every possible load or lift. Employers must ensure that the designated rigger is capable of safely performing the work required for that job.

Does crane operator certification automatically make someone a qualified rigger?
No. Crane operation and rigging are separate responsibilities requiring different knowledge and demonstrated abilities.

A certified crane operator may also qualify as a rigger if that individual has the necessary training, knowledge, experience, and ability. Operator certification by itself does not automatically establish rigger qualification.

When is a qualified signalperson required?
A qualified signalperson may be required when the crane operator cannot fully see the point of operation, when the operator’s view is obstructed in the direction of travel, when site-specific safety concerns require signals, or when the operator or person handling the load determines that signal assistance is necessary.

The signalperson must understand the signals being used, know the equipment’s basic operating limitations, and be able to communicate clearly with the operator.

What is the difference between a rigger and a signalperson?
A rigger selects, inspects, and uses rigging equipment to attach and control a load. A signalperson communicates movement instructions and safety information to the crane operator.

One person may perform both roles when properly trained and qualified, but the responsibilities and required knowledge are not identical.

Are rigger and signalperson credentials the same as crane operator certification?
No. Crane operators, riggers, and signalpersons have different responsibilities. Training or certification in one role does not automatically qualify an individual for the others.

Employers should confirm that each worker has the proper training, qualifications, evaluations, and documentation for the duties being performed.
